New ‘This Ability’ Course Starts This May!

The Hull FC Community Foundation will launch a new ‘This Ability’ course next month, giving people with a disability the tools to work towards employment.

This Ability is a 12 to 16 week development programme for individuals aged 17-29 who have a disability, a learning difficulty, a long-term health condition or a mental health condition.

Designed to help learners develop the skills and experience required to progress into employment, the Community Foundation has already helped a handful of individuals up the employment ladder in recent months and years.

There is a mix of classroom-based learning and real, high-quality work experience involved, with the opportunity to take on a work experience role at Hull FC!

One former This Ability learner said: “During the course, I was helped out with things like my confidence and finding work experience. I worked in the club shop for a short while and that helped me grow my confidence, definitely.”

For those in the Hull & East Riding region, This Ability also comes with a handful of great perks, such as a weekly bus pass, provided on attendance, and free tickets to Hull FC fixtures, including the chance to tour the MKM Stadium!

Plus, there is also weekly gym access at Hull FC’s Elite Performance Centre.

Qualifications include Sports Leadership Level 1, Food Hygiene Level 2 and Customer Service Level 1.

Hull FC Head of Inclusion Mike Swainger, who oversees the This Ability project, said: “We’re delighted to be running another This Ability course.

“It really helps people discover themselves, and it gives them a better understanding of what they want to do with their careers.

“The course, which lasts for up to 16 weeks, provides people with a real wealth of experience, and I have seen first hand how much it can develop confidence within individuals.”

The 2023 course begins on Monday 15th May, and applications can be submitted here
