We would like to offer you a warm welcome from all the team here at the Hull FC Centre of Excellence. We are excited to introduce our welcome pack and hope you can join us for what promises to be another fantastic year.

As a student at Hull FC COE, you will benefit from first class academic programmes based in a professional sporting environment. Our programme boasts outstanding facilities in which you are able to study and participate in sport, whilst also providing unique career development pathways.

We have a fantastic track record of success, with 97% of students securing employment or going on to a higher level of study within six months of completing their course. This is made possible through high quality course delivery, work experience placements and careers guidance from staff.

With outstanding results in nationally recognised qualifications, extra-curricular sports academies, access to specialist work placement and fantastic trips and guest speakers, we pride ourselves on providing every one of our students with the perfect platform to succeed and launch a successful and fulfilling career in an area they are passionate about.

The Hull FC Centre of Excellence provides an unrivalled college programme which aligns both coaching and education to give young students the very best opportunity to progress into professional sport – both playing or employment.

We want a pathway that can attract and develop the best talent locally and from further afield, as well as a  systemcommitted to enhancing the grassroots development of our sport across the country.

Our philosophy – reach for the stars

Our five-star approach not only signifies the standard of the  programme we aim to deliver, but it defines our strategy for development and performance.

The alignment to all areas of the club and collaboration with key  stakeholders is fundamental to the club’s development philosophy. Whether it is first-team or grassroots coaching, or the CEO  to the local scouts – everyone has become invested in theprogramme  and believes wholeheartedly in the club’s approach, which will be  critical to the pathway being a success.

We believe there is more to developing a rugby league player than just  coaching and we feel obligated as a leading Super Leagueclub to  develop young rugby league players and coaches to enable them to  enjoy a long and successful career within the sport.

What can you study?

We offer a number of courses that can help get you on your way to a career in sport. The routes will depend on your predicted or current GCSE grades. Please use our guide below to help understand which level you need to apply for.

Coaching & Education Team

Ryan Langton

Ryan has worked within the education department of Hull FC Foundation for 6 years. Making his way through every role within the department before more recently heading up the program. Ryan was a Hull FC Academy and England youth representative before suffering an injury which put his aspirations of professional sport to the back of his priorities. Since then Ryan has progressed through an academic pathway where he has graduated both as a sports scientist and a teacher.

Jack Lazenby

Jack is a graduate of the University of Hull with a BSC Honours degree in Sports Coaching and Performance. Jack joined the Centre of Excellence after completing his teaching training within Physical Education. Jack has a great understanding of both Rugby League and educational progression pathways. Jack has achieved representative honours within both student and amateur Rugby League being part of a student World Cup in Australia and most recently touring New Zealand with the England Community Lions.

Richard Tate

Richard is a UKCC RFL Level 3 licensed coach and has over 14 years of coaching insight from within Schools, Colleges, Universities and Elite Academies environments.  Richard brings a wealth of experience from his current roles with the Hull FC Academy and England Universities.  Richard has a real passion for coaching and developing players at all levels of the game and is one of the most respected and talented young coaches within Rugby League.

Kieran Smith

Kieran is a Level 2 licensed coach and has a BA Honours degree in Sports, Health and Exercise Science. Kieran joined our program from Student Rugby League as a long serving member of the England Students pathway. Kieran has a great understanding of both Rugby League and educational progression pathways. Kieran is currently a part of the league 1 side Coventry Bears. Kieran is the lead tutor on our Higher National Diploma.

Abby Omblertruran

Abby is a graduate of the University of Hull with a BSC Honours degree in Sports Coaching and Performance before more recently completing a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education through the University of Huddersfield. Abby is a long serving member of Hull FC Foundation; previously working within the 14-16 education sector before moving into the Centre of Excellence in September 2019. Abby has a wealth of experience in racket sports, excelling in Squash and Tennis as a player and coach.

Student Progressions

Davy Joined Hull FC College in 2019 on an NCFE Level 2 program and was immediately identified as a talented athlete; Davy progressed from attending a Hull FC College open day, to being name Hull FC College captain in his first month before joining up with Hull FC 1st team after 15 months. Davy continued studying with Hull FC College after being promoted into the 1stteam and is achieving way above his target grade; Davy is predicted to graduate college in July 2022. Davy is set to continue training with Hull FC 1stteam and become a regular feature in Hull FC reserve squad in 2021/22.

Reece joined Hull FC College in 2019 on an NCFE Level 3 program with the aspirations of going to university to study Sports Coaching. Reece participated in the Hull FC College 1stteam on a regular basis and was regularly invited to join the academy on a training trial. Reece undertook a zero-hour contract with the Foundation during the summer taking on the role of a Community Sports Coach working across the city on a variety of holiday camps. Reece graduated Hull FC College in July 2021 and enrolled at the University of Hull in September 2021 on a Sports Coaching degree.

Conner joined Hull FC College in 2018 on an NCFE Level 2 program. Conner was quickly identified as a talented athlete and move into an elite talent squad which sat underneath Hull FC Academy. In 2020 Conner made his Hull FC Academy debut but was unable to continue his development and earn an academy contract due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Shortly after graduating college Conner applied to the Hull FC Foundation through the Kickstart program; following a successful interview process Conner started with the Foundation in July 2021 as a Community Sport and Engagement Officer.

  • Hull FC Academy – Up to 10 hours training sessions per week plus fixtures.

  • 10 volunteer/work experience hours.
  • Enrichment activities (Multi-sports inc; cricket, golf, ultimate frisbee, gym instruction, rugby, football etc.)
  • Media training (e.g match day analysis, video and photography)
  • English & Math’s study and GCSE re-sits (if applicable).
  • Additional Qualifications – Referee’s Course, Level 1 RFL Qualification.
  • All students will receive Hull FC match day tickets.
