Last month, we brought you Bailey’s story – a Hull FC Community Foundation coach who earned his stripes through attending the Hull FC Sports College.
But he is not the only community coach who has studied at the sports college.
After studying a Diploma in Sports Coaching and Personal Training, Beth Staveley-Haynes graduated from the sports college in 2023, and she told hullfcfoundation.co.uk about how she transitioned from college student into community coach.
“Once I was coming to the end of my personal training course, my tutor was telling me about opportunities with the Community Foundation. Straight away, I was interested and I came across a social media post looking for volunteers,” she explained.
“So I got in touch and I was invited to come in and have a chat about some of the volunteering opportunities and the pathway that would best suit me – I knew at the time that I wanted to go into schools and assist with PE lessons.
“Sam French put a really good plan together for me, where I went out to some primary schools that are part of the Community Foundation’s Partner School programme. It was great to be able to go into the schools with some of the more experienced coaches and pick up little bits and bobs from them and their delivery.
“After roughly two months of volunteering with the Community Foundation, I was given some paid hours and this was a massive confidence boost because it gave me the responsibility of going into schools and delivering solo.
She continued: “Now we’re into a new academic year, I’m now a full-time member of staff with the Community Foundation, so that means I am doing even more than going into schools – I’m also heading out to deliver other projects.
“I think it’s been a very positive and rewarding journey in such a short space of time – one that comes with a lot of constant learning. But ultimately, it has helped my confidence grow massively.
“The support and guidance from the other coaches has been great and it’s really helped in my own personal development.”
