The Hull FC Community Foundation is celebrating the remarkable impact of it’s Rugby in the Park project, which has continued to grow across the West Hull area throughout 2025 and into 2026. Funded by the local policing unit and supported by Hull City Council Ward Councillors, the initiative has become a standout example of how sport can bring communities together and create meaningful change.
What began as a targeted effort to provide young people with a safe and positive activity has developed into a thriving weekly programme. Held every Monday evening in Gower Park, the sessions have attracted more than 75 registrations from local young people eager to get involved with Rugby League. Alongside high‑quality coaching delivered by the Hull FC Community Foundation team, participants have enjoyed visits from Hull FC First Team players, who have offered encouragement, inspiration, and memorable experiences. Many young people have also received complimentary tickets to Hull FC home fixtures, helping to strengthen their connection with the club and the wider community.
The project’s influence has extended far beyond the rugby field. Over the past eight months, local statistics show a substantial drop in youth‑related crime and anti‑social behaviour across the Hessle area. Partners credit this improvement to the consistency of the sessions, the positive role models involved, and the strong collaboration between the Foundation and local policing teams.
Reflecting on the success of the programme, Ryan Gibbons, Youth Engagement Lead at the Hull FC Community Foundation, said:
“Rugby in the Park has shown just what sport can do when it’s used to bring people together. The young people have embraced the sessions, built confidence, and created a real sense of belonging. Seeing the impact of the project has been fantastic to see, and it’s a testament to what strong partnerships and community commitment can achieve.”
Sgt. Matt Langrick of Humberside Police, who has worked closely with the Foundation throughout the project, highlighted the importance of this partnership:
The reduction in youth‑related antisocial behaviour across the Hessle area speaks for itself. By working alongside the Hull FC Community Foundation, we’ve been able to offer young people a positive alternative and a consistent support network. This project has made a real difference, and we’re proud to see the community benefiting from it.”
With strong engagement, measurable outcomes, and continued support from local partners, Rugby in the Park is set to remain a key part of youth provision in the areas, with a chance to grow within other areas of Hull.
