Results Day brought good news in more ways than one for our college students last week, as Matty Laidlaw signed a two-year deal with the Hull FC Academy.
97% of all students across the college’s various courses achieved their target grade or above, including our NCFE Level 2 & 3 courses in Sport & Physical Activity, and our Level 4 & 5 Sport & Exercise Science courses.
Laidlaw hasn’t yet graduated – he is still halfway through his NCFE Extended Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity. But away from studying, he has a passion for playing rugby league, and his hard work has paid off after he was rewarded with a two-year deal with the club’s academy.
The Hull Dockers Amateur was part of the club’s Extended Scholars after he was not originally signed as an academy player for the Black & Whites. But he hasn’t let that deter him – if anything it seems to have spurred him on to prove his doubters wrong.
Laidlaw has impressed throughout 2021, performing strongly for the college and scholarship sides. The prop forward scored an impressive try against Newcastle Thunder earlier in the year, which was so good it was shared on the club’s social media accounts!
He was also selected to feature for the Hull FC Academy in a 24-16 victory over Bradford Bulls Under 19s earlier this season.
Such has been Laidlaw’s determination and workmanlike attitude that he has been rewarded with a two-year deal with the academy, where he will hope to follow in the footstep of two current academy players who have already made their senior Hull FC debuts in Super League this season.
Head of Education at the Centre of Excellence Ryan Langton said: “Matty has a really good attitude both to learning and playing rugby and I’m thrilled with the news that he has been given a two-year contract with the academy.
“He has the right balance between concentrating in the classroom when he is studying and focusing on his rugby league when he’s training with the academy and scholarship teams, which is a real key asset to have.”
