Movement, Community and Progress: The Growing Impact of Parkinson’s Active with Hull FC Foundation

The Hull FC Foundation’s Parkinson’s Active programme continues to go from strength to strength, offering a lifeline of movement, confidence and connection for people living with Parkinson’s across the city. What began as a small initiative has grown into a vibrant, supportive community where participants feel empowered to take control of their wellbeing through safe, enjoyable physical activity.

Through funding from Parkinson’s UK, the Foundation’s health team has been able to deliver this project and work closely with participants as they navigate the challenges of managing the disease. This support has allowed the team to create a consistent, high‑quality programme that meets people where they are and helps them build confidence week by week.

Parkinson’s Active is built around a simple belief: staying active can make a meaningful difference to life with Parkinson’s. As part of the programme, the group has had the chance to try a range of new and adapted sports, including netball, walking rugby and cricket. These sessions not only help improve balance, strength and coordination, but also give participants the confidence to explore activities they may never have considered before. Carers are always welcome too, helping to create a shared experience that strengthens relationships and reduces isolation.

But the benefits extend beyond the physical. The programme has become a place where people connect with others who understand what they’re going through. After each session, participants head off with the group and get there selves a hot drink and build social skills with each other. These conversations help build friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging that lasts long after the session ends.

The impact has been clear. Participants report feeling steadier on their feet, more confident in their daily movements and more positive about managing their condition. The Foundation’s team has seen remarkable progress, from improved posture and mobility to renewed motivation and independence.

Jasmine Render, Hull FC Foundation’s, Head of Health and Wellbeing has been closely involved in the programme’s development and delivery. Reflecting on its success, she shared:

“It has been truly wonderful to work with our Parkinson’s Active participants and see the difference these sessions make to their lives. Every week we witness improvements in confidence, movement and mood. I firmly believe that sport and physical activity can be a powerful tool for managing Parkinson’s, and this programme shows just how transformative it can be when people feel supported, encouraged and part of a community.”

As the programme continues to grow, the Foundation remains committed to expanding opportunities for people living with long‑term health conditions. Parkinson’s Active is a shining example of what can be achieved through the work of sport and physical activity.

Our Parkinson’s Active Sessions run every Tuesday afternoon at the University of Hull, Sports & Fitness Centre on Inglemire Lane,
