Helen Needham’s journey with the Hull FC Community Foundation is one defined by commitment, growth, and a deep passion for the sport she loves. Her story began in 2018 when she became part of Hull FC’s first ever Women’s Rugby League team, helping to establish a programme that would pave the way for future generations of female players. Over four seasons, Helen became a valued member of the squad, known for her work ethic, leadership, and the pride she carried every time she represented the club.
After retiring from playing, Helen chose not to step away from the game. Instead, she found a new purpose in developing young talent, joining the Foundation as an assistant coach with the Under‑16 girls’ team. Here, she began passing on her knowledge to girls taking their first steps into rugby league, helping them build confidence, understand the game, and feel part of a supportive community.
“The transition from being a rugby player to becoming a rugby coach showed me that my passion for the game was bigger than just playing. Becoming head coach has given me the opportunity to help young girls build confidence, develop their skills, and enjoy their rugby the way I always did.”
Helen’s coaching journey continued to evolve as she progressed to assisting with the Under‑16 girls’ team, supporting both the lead coach and the programme’s development lead. Her influence grew as she worked with players at a crucial stage in their development, guiding them through more advanced skills and helping them prepare for the next level of the sport. Alongside her hands‑on coaching, Helen also completed her RFL Level 2 Coaching Qualification through the Foundation — a milestone that strengthened her pathway toward becoming a lead coach.
Now into 2026, Helen has fully stepped into that role, successfully transitioning into the Head Coach of the Hull FC Under‑16 girl’s side. Now lead coaching the team she once supported, she brings together her playing experience, coaching education, and passion for developing the girls game. Her leadership continues to shape the future of the women and girl’s pathway at Hull FC, inspiring players to grow both on and off the field.
“Being head coach this season isn’t just about winning games, it’s about building not only better rugby players, but better human beings. That’s what I want to achieve.”
