Rob Smith: A Story of Strength, Belonging and Community Through Wheelchair Rugby League

Rob Smith’s journey with the Hull FC Community Foundation’s Wheelchair Rugby League team is one shaped by resilience, support, and rediscovered confidence. After a serious accident, Rob found himself facing not only physical challenges but the emotional weight that comes with adjusting to a new way of living. Everyday tasks like shopping or going out in his wheelchair often left him feeling exposed and uncomfortable.

Rob’s introduction to Wheelchair Rugby League came through Mike Swainger (Head of Inclusion at Hull FC Foundation), who encouraged him to attend a session and gave him the reassurance he needed during a difficult period. That invitation became a turning point. From the moment he arrived, the team made him feel welcome, supported, and valued.

Instead of watching from the sidelines, Head Coach, Martin Norris made sure Rob got straight into a chair on his first Monday session. That moment, being encouraged to take part rather than observe, helped Rob reconnect with his own strength and ability. Rob could focus on learning, improving, and enjoying the new sport.

Wheelchair Rugby League quickly became more than a weekly activity for Rob. It became the only sport Rob could play alongside his sons, something he describes as priceless. Sharing the court with them brought back a sense of normality and pride that had been missing since his accident.

“This is the only sport I can do with my boys, and that alone means everything to me. I might not be the best, but I’ll always give 100 percent.”

With guidance from teammates, Rob began pushing himself further each week. Their patience, encouragement and willingness to explain the game helped him grow both physically and mentally. Rob is the first to say he may not be the best player on the court, but he gives everything he has every time he trains, and that commitment has become a source of strength.

Training with the team has helped Rob feel comfortable. For the first time since his accident, he felt confident, capable and part of something bigger.

Rob’s journey is also closely connected to his workplace, Yorkshire Plywood, a long-term sponsor of the Hull FC Wheelchair Super League team. Their continued support helps ensure that players have access to the equipment and resources they need to train and compete safely. As the sport grows and more new players join, the demand for specialist chairs, wheels and equipment increases. Support from organisations like Yorkshire Plywood plays a vital role in helping the team develop and ensuring that opportunities remain open to everyone.

Wheelchair Rugby League has now only transformed Rob’s life, but has helped him improve his physical health, strengthening his mental wellbeing and has given him a community where he feels understood and supported. It has given him a place to belong, a team to grow with, and a sport he can share with his boys.

“The support from the team, from Mike, from Norris, and from the lads who push me every week — it’s helped me more than they probably realise.”

His story reflects the heart of the Hull FC Community Foundation, through creating opportunities, building confidence and changing lives through inclusive sport.
